Volcanalia a building born from the basaltic hills.

ASA studio, by Flavio Albanese designed this wine house that was born in the volcanic hills in the Vicenza area.

On the wine road in Gambellara, an area with an agricultural vocation where there is a close relationship with the land and nature in a mutual balance of constant respect.

Project objective

Integration, harmony with the land and the intended use. This was the guiding thread of the Volcanalia project, a wine cellar in the province of Vicenza in Italy, with a strong connection to the land. The architectural firm was looking for a raw material that was natural and sustainable, but at the same time did not have the typical appearance of mountain wood, but rather its own specific identity. They came up with the idea of charred wood, famous since ancient times, shaped by the force of fire, the same fire that shaped the volcanic hills where the building stands. The meeting with ARDES DRY HI-TECH by Sapiens sealed the choice of this material, bringing into the project a high quality Italian product with long durability and low maintenance requirements over the decades.

Type of intervention

Application on a substructure of Accoya joists, of Ardes Dry cladding, with triple-width, custom-length planks necessary to create a specific alignment on the facades of the building to create three bands of parallel application. Connection system between plank and batten obtained by means of steel dowel fixing positioned in an ‘invisible’ manner to allow the fixing element to disappear from view.
The vertical slats have been finished with the same material turned up in the depths. The entrance doors are camouflaged thanks to the design with the same flush wall covering.
