OODI Central Library
Helsinki(FIN)
A national symbol that combines Design and Nature
The Oodi Central Library is the most important public library in Finland, and is located in Helsinki. In this project, signed by the Finnish architecture firm ALA, the external walkway of the structure is characterized by an unmistakable sinuous shape reminiscent of the belly of a boat.
Objective
of the project
The central library of Helsinki in Finland, this project had to express the maximum synthesis of a free, modern and sustainable style represented by the use of wood in combination with glass and steel, respecting the need for energy efficiency with sustainable materials. The materials in the outdoor area had to represent maximum durability and total resistance to harsh climates prolonged for several months a year. The designers chose a wide use of wood, both internal and external. Considering that in the upper part of the terrace, the structure is extremely subject to the high footfall and the great weather stress typical of the harsh Finnish climate: the wood of Accoya is a material that has perfectly matched the design of the structure, the Finnish construction tradition and the strength and durability necessary for the final use of the product.
Type
of Intervention
the material chosen to cover the terraces and the balcony of the upper floor was a decking in natural Accoya tables grade A1, with color stabilization treatment with natural protective oil to keep alive the natural and sustainable appearance of the wood. The installation was carried out on the structure of joints with exposed steel connections.
